NSIS/NSIRB Shock Vibration Testing Method

The shock vibration testing method is a way to diagnose the health of bridge piers and architectural structures. It is already registered with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's NETIS, and there are evaluation criteria from organizations such as the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.

In the case of large bridge piers, a weight of about 20 kg is struck, and for frame structures, measurements are taken using a plastic hammer or similar tools. The seismic response spectrum is recorded using multiple small microphones, and mathematical processing is performed on a computer to produce results. This result is compared in a database to determine the health of the structure, making it a quantitative non-destructive testing method. It is a lightweight and easy-to-use device consisting only of a computer and microphones, capable of measuring the structural integrity with high precision and quantitatively.
